Neolamprologus Leleupis are beautfiul long and slender Lake Tanganyika Cichlids usually seen in the hobby with bright yellow colouration. They have very large mouths for a small fish and have impressive fangs that can be seen when viewed in front. They were introduced to the hobby in 1958 (Riehl & Baensch, 1985) and since then was (and still is) considered as one of the all-time favourite African Cichlids in the hobby. Leleupis remained rare for quite some time due to some misconceptions on their natural habitat preferred water conditions and breeding behaviours. They were first collected from soft and acidic waters in Zaire and were kept in purest rainwaters - The softer and more acidic the water was, the sooner these fish died. Nevertheless, they flourished the hobby around the early seventies when they began to breed Leleupis in large numbers.

Leleupis are adored by hobbyists not only because of their bright colouration and elegant slender form, but also because of their parental behaviour. They are usually yellow, where their nickname "Lemon Cichlid" was basically derived from, and have some irridiscent bluish or greenish shades along the mouths and / or the gills. They do not have strong sexual dimorphism -as males and females usually have the same colour intensity - except that the males grow siginificantly bigger (sometimes even twice the size of the females') with thicker heads and may develop cranial bumps and longer pelvic fins.

There are a couple of color morphs that can be seen in the lake. The yellowish orange variant is signifcantly more abundant, but the colours silvery-beige and brownish-black are frequently seen in the same habitats. Although the darker fish were identified a bit earlier, they were classified together with the yellow morph. Researchers found that the darker morph have the same yellow pigments as the brighter ones who happened to just be lacking the dark (dark brown to black) colouration.

In the wild, Leleupis are normally found from 5 to 40 meters deep around rocks and rubbles in the lake feeding on aquatic insects, crustaceans and invertibrates. They are solitary species and are relatively peaceful but can be very aggressive towards conspecifics, both males and females, except for the preferred female, during breeding season . They can form monogamous pairs and nuclear families while tending the fry.

Neolamprologus Leleupis are a sight to see in an aquarium. They add more life to your setup with their bright colour, handsome form and intelligence. They are not difficult to keep as long as their requirements are met - which are not much - like a good water condition, proper housing and a varied and healthy diet.
